Tomorrow my 7-week old son undergoes major open-heart surgery, the first of three major surgeries that are part of the palliative surgical route for treating a univentricular heart.

Just thinking about it makes me feel nauseous, the surgery will take about 8 hours, they will cool his body temperature to about 17 degrees celsius. They will disconnect the arteries to his brain and his body before rerouting the blood supply and reconnecting the arteries. The surgery is insanely complex, his heart is tiny, about the size of a ping pong ball. My wife and I have had months to prepare mentally for this, yet here I am unable to sleep.

Tomorrow I will be wearing brown underwear.
